What Is CoolSculpting® and How Does It Work?

CoolSculpting® is a revolutionary alternative to liposuction that is scientifically proven to reduce stubborn areas of localized fat in various regions of the body through a unique process known as Cryolipolysis™. The scientists and doctors who developed CoolSculpting® discovered that controlled cooling triggers a process of safe, natural fat cell removal in the patient’s treated areas. Once targeted fat tissue is frozen, the body breaks down the cells and expels them via natural metabolic processes. This reduction in the thickness of diet- and exercise-resistant fat layers results in a slimmer, more toned appearance for the treatment area(s).

What Areas of the Body Can Be Treated with CoolSculpting®?

Due to the number of special applicators now available—such as the CoolMini™ applicator for double chin reduction—CoolSculpting® can be used to diminish fat and improve the contour of numerous regions of the body, including:

Am I a Candidate for CoolSculpting®

The best candidates for CoolSculpting® are typically those who are experiencing mild to moderate degrees of excess fat in isolated areas of the body. For patients affected by larger pockets of excess fat, a surgical procedure such as liposuction may be the more ideal option. It is important to remember that CoolSculpting® is not designed to be a weight loss treatment. In fact, good candidates for this procedure are usually individuals who are at or near the average weight for their size and body type. CoolSculpting® can be an effective treatment option for patients who cannot get rid of certain amounts of excess fat that has accumulated in specific body areas through standard diet and exercise routines.

During your initial consultation, we will evaluate your needs and help you determine whether CoolSculpting® is an ideal treatment for your goals.

CoolSculpting® vs. Liposuction

CoolSculpting® and liposuction are both body contouring treatments that can be very effective for reducing excess fat that has collected in specific body regions; however, these procedures are quite distinct from one another in many ways. For instance: CoolSculpting® involves no surgery, no anesthesia, and no injections of any kind. Additionally, patients who undergo CoolSculpting® typically do not need a period of downtime. By contrast, liposuction is a surgical procedure that will necessitate a recovery period. With that in mind, liposuction is capable of effectively treating areas of excess fat that are quite large and severe, whereas CoolSculpting® can only be effective for fat pockets that are mild to moderate in nature.

What Is the CoolSculpting® Treatment Like?

CoolSculpting® treatments at Bella Derma are performed by our highly experienced skin care professionals, all of whom have received comprehensive training in this non-surgical fat reduction technique. During the procedure, the appropriate CoolSculpting® applicator will be utilized to send precisely controlled cooling energy into targeted accumulations of stubborn fat. As cooling begins, patients can usually expect to feel a tingling and/or cold sensation in the area, but these effects should gradually fade as the region slowly becomes numb.

The CoolSculpting® treatment should take less than one hour per targeted region to complete. Due to its non-invasive nature, patients are able to remain alert throughout the entirety of their CoolSculpting® procedure, often enjoying the opportunity to read a book/magazine or watch television. Once they leave our office, the majority of individuals can resume normal daily activities with little to no downtime.

What Is Recovery from CoolSculpting® Like?

One of the most prominent benefits of CoolSculpting® treatment is that it typically requires no recovery time following the procedure. As noted in the section above, most patients who undergo CoolSculpting® are able to go right back to their regular routines as soon as they leave our office. While there will likely be some irritation and bruising in the treatment areas, these effects should fade within a few days.

How Soon Are CoolSculpting® Results Noticeable?

Within two to four months after treatment, CoolSculpting® patients should notice improved contours and enhanced curves as the body removes excess fat cells. In some instances, the slimming effects can continue to be observed for at least six months. Each CoolSculpting® session can reduce fat by approximately 20–25 percent, so most patients are able to achieve an ideal outcome after a single procedure. If additional fat reduction is needed or desired, however, supplemental treatments can be scheduled after about three to four months to provide enough time for the body to fully break down and eliminate fat in the area(s) targeted during the initial procedure. In order to maintain optimal results, our team recommends consuming a well-rounded diet and exercising on a consistent basis to help keep the body lean and toned.

Does CoolSculpting® Have Any Risks or Side Effects?

Approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), CoolSculpting® is considered a very safe fat reduction procedure. The most common side effects experienced by patients include redness, tingling, bruising, and/or itching in the targeted area(s), though these symptoms are temporary and should lessen over the course of a few days until fully resolved.

What Does CoolSculpting® Cost?

CoolSculpting® prices are influenced by several different components, such as the quantity of areas being targeted, the skill and experience of the provider, where the practice is geographically located, and more. At Bella Derma, the cost of CoolSculpting® packages begins at $750 per treatment region. Since the procedure is not covered by insurance, our medi spa offers PatientFi™ for patients who wish to pay for treatment with financial assistance. This respected healthcare lender has a number of monthly payment plans to choose from, helping to make CoolSculpting® affordable for virtually any budget.

Additional Frequently Asked Questions About CoolSculpting®

Does CoolSculpting® hurt?

Although most patients do not report feelings of excessive pain, individuals may experience some degree of stinging or pinching at the beginning of the CoolSculpting® treatment. As the targeted area gradually becomes numb with the cooling technique, these sensations usually fade quickly, and patients can relax for the duration of the treatment. It is common for patients to be able to resume normal activities shortly after leaving the office once their CoolSculpting® is complete.

Is CoolSculpting® safe?

With its non-invasive methodology, CoolSculpting® is able to provide excess fat reduction treatment without many of the inherent risks associated with surgery and general anesthesia. However, that does not mean that CoolSculpting® is completely without risk, and individuals should always seek an experienced and highly qualified CoolSculpting® provider to perform their procedure. This will maximize the chances that the treatment is administered by a provider who takes the proper precautions and has the necessary skills and training to achieve an optimal, beautifully contoured result. Possible side effects of CoolSculpting® include scarring, skin discoloration, skin sensitivities, and frostbite; however, these side effects are rare, and the risk of their potential occurrence can be minimized when performed by skilled professionals, such as the team at Bella Derma Medi Spa.

Is CoolSculpting® permanent?

Once the CoolSculpting® treatment is complete and the targeted fat cells have filtered out of the body, they should be permanently expunged and cannot grow back. This is only applicable to those specifically treated fat cells – the surrounding cells can expand in size as a reaction to weight gain or weight fluctuations. Following the appropriate post-treatment instructions provided by your CoolSculpting® specialist can extend the final result for many years to come and possibly a lifetime. Maintenance recommendations include a healthy lifestyle, nutritious diet, regular exercise, and limitation of excessive weight fluctuations over time.

Can CoolSculpting® treat gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition that leads to an increased amount of breast tissue (excess fat or glandular tissue) in men. If the patient has a mild amount of excess fatty tissue in the breasts, CoolSculpting® may be a beneficial solution. For gynecomastia cases in which there is excess glandular tissue, it will likely be advised to seek an alternative procedure, such as male breast reduction, which can extract excess glandular tissue and/or utilize liposuction in cases of severe excess fat in the breasts. It is best to receive a full evaluation and consultation with an expert provider to determine which treatment is best.

Is CoolSculpting® covered by insurance?

CoolSculpting® is an elective cosmetic procedure, so it is likely not covered by health insurance providers. During the initial consultation, we will review all costs as well as convenient payment and third-party financing options available for qualified candidates that can help bring CoolSculpting® treatment into your budget.
